Seven leaders of Golden Sachs turned down their 2008 company performance bonuses. Hopefully, this won't set them back. Chief executive Lloyd Blankfein's last year bonus last year was $US68.5 million ($106.5 million). Mr Winkelried, president and Mr Cohn, co-chief operating officer received $104.5m, and Mr Viniar, chief financial officer made $88m. The other officers' salaries were not disclosed. News sources report they all declined their bonuses, because the company did not perform well. Don't they need that money? Anyway that's a lotta of boxes of Mac N Cheese. READ MORE...
I came across this 2006 article where it was reported the Wall Street investment bank would be distributing $16 billion in holiday bonuses. That was an average of $600,000 per employee. I am definitely in the wrong field. Some of the company big shots would get as much as $100 million. ABC News translated that cash into some useful and alternative purchases it could have gone towards. Here are a couple:
"You could pay Harvard tuition for more than 1,500 students who couldn't afford it ($70.5 million), provide health care to over 1,000 Americans for a year ($7 million), and still have enough to buy a different Brioni designer suit for every single day of the year ($6,000 suits for all 365 days would cost $22 million).
You could take everyone in the country of Grenada to a Broadway show, then buy the most expensive apartment in New York City (a triplex penthouse at the Pierre Hotel, $70 million), and still have an extra $15 million dollars in your pocket -- over 300 times the median income of the average American household. The body of deceased 24 year old Angel Pantoja Medina was left standing erect up against a wall by his coffin during his wake at his mother's home in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Medina's body was found under a bridge and his mother was fulfilling his death wishes. What an unusual request and it's nice that his family honored his wishes, however strange it may appear. The photos are amazing. He is so young and had already talked about death with his family. See Photos
According to an Ananova article:
"A Puerto Rican man has been granted his last wish - to remain standing, even after death.
Special embalming treatment was used on the corpse of 24-year-old Angel Pantoja Medina to keep him on his feet for his three-day wake.
Dressed in a Yankees baseball cap and sunglasses, Pantoja was mourned by relatives while propped upright in his mother's living room.
His brother Carlos told the El Nuevo Dia newspaper: "He wanted to be happy, standing.""

Caught on MBTA cameras: Apparently, drunken, a man fell onto the Orange Line track pit. Two MBTA workers jumped in to help him. The workers had to cross two live third rails with 600 volts of electricity.
Would you commit this heroic act? I don’t know…it is hard to say I would. I would probably call 911 first. At least these workers had some knowledge about the rails. I get a little nervous handling a AAA battery if it has a little battery acid on it. I have no knowledge about electricity and train rails, and am quite sure I would be fried to a California raisin crisp trying to save somebody. It would just be my luck. WATCH VIDEO

Violence broke out after last Saturday's Hartford, Connecticut West Indian Day parade which left a 21 year old dead, a toddler shot in the leg and a 7 year old suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. I attended this parade last year and did not go this year, but a friend went and said it occurred after he left.
As a result or all of this nonsense, mayor Eddie Perez has imposed a 30 day 9 pm curfew for all teens under 18. How about making this permanent, better yet, making it a nationwide policy in problem areas?
The curfew will begin this Thursday and anyone under 18 years old, caught on the streets after 9 pm without a parent or guardian, will be detained and taken to a community center where a parent or guardian will have to pick them up. READ MORE... WATCH VIDEO
Guess how much it is worth?

“I was thanking God that nobody got killed right there and then,” said Carlos Gonzoles, 43, who was standing nearby when the bolt hit. “It’s a miracle that nobody died. I don’t even have words to explain how dangerous that was. People were dropping like they were made of paper.” --Boston Herald
Yesterday, in New England, the lightning and thunder stormed through the area, and in Dorchester, a soccer game was interrupted by the rain. Ten males, ages ranging from a 12 year old to men in their forties took refuge under a tree. Lightning struck and all of them fell to the ground, stricken by a bolt. Four of the victims were left in critical condition, and I do not know how many suffered electrical burns, but the news reported two suffered heart attacks. This was truly a miracle that no one had died.
I thought it was universal knowledge, I mean, I learned from a very young age in elementary school—never stand under tree when it is lightning outside. The news stated many of the people who attended the game or participated in the match were from South American or Latin American countries. This must be common knowledge in those countries also, right? READ MORE...

Jazz singer Rene Marie was invited to sing the National Anthem at Mayor John Hickenlooper’s State of the City address in Denver, Colorado. Homegirl broke out into the “National Black Anthem” also known as “Lift Every Voice and Sing” over the “Star Spangled Banner” beat. This enraged some of the event attendees. The Rocky Mountain News reports people have sent hate mail out as a result.
According to Rocky Mountain News:
Councilman Charlie Brown: “There is no substitute for the national anthem. Period…This is the State of the City address. It's not an NAACP convention."
The Mayor responded:
"I'm disappointed that this matter has been a distraction from the great work and significant accomplishments of our city employees over the past year and the many important initiatives on tap for the coming year.
She blended the two songs together. She was trying to make an artistic expression of her love for the country. She did not intend to make a political statement or anything."
Renee Marie said she was expressing her artistic expression:
"…I don't think it is necessary for an artist to ask permission to express themselves artistically…I would not change a thing…You have to risk things. You have to. Otherwise, you might of well live your life by a script."
Was she right to start singing the National Black Anthem when she was supposed to be singing the National Anthem? I think if she agreed to sing the “National Anthem,” then that is the song she should have committed to singing. Why do people have to send hate mail?
