I was over on Thad Matthews' site reading a post he made about a Clear Channel black radio personality allegedly called Michelle Obama “ugly.” Once again, it is someone who should be the last person to be calling someone ugly. Many of the comments relate to M.O., Clear Channel, and the post in general. Many of his commenters post under “anonymous” and the last post I read was thought provoking.
Here is what anonymous @ 8:38 PM said:
“this is what Bobby said this morning. He said that at some point in your life sometimes you need to think like a white person and a white person should think like a black person. You need to have the abiities to switch the way that you think. he siad when you go out to purchase a house or car, you should think, what would a white person choose. He said that his thinking is a gift from God. He has the abilities to switch from left to right. Some of yall stay black all of the time.”
I wished that person had elaborated further. This comment can be dissected from several different angles. Think like a white person when you go out and buy a car or home? How about think like an educated investor or consumer when you go out and make a purchase? I think I get what the person was saying, but I am not so sure I fully agree with it. http://thadmatthews.blogspot.com/2008/08/black-radio-personality-calls-michelle.html

Man oh man, I hope this isn't true. They are my favorite tennis players. But the reality is, there are many blacks that don't patronize other black owned services or businesses. There is an excellent interview over at Black Tennis Pros blog with blackprofessional tennis coach, Morris King, Jr., photo'd with Richard Williams. King has coached the sisters in the past and here is what he had to say on their hiring practices:
Q: What did you like the most and the least about working with Richard Williams and his daughters?
A: The opportunity itself is what I liked the most. What I liked the least I cannot say due to the agreement. But I will say that I don't like the fact that the sisters, since having reached their majority age (meaning that they make their own decisions due to adulthood) ONLY hire whites, unless the person is a family member.
I am one of those Blacks that was arrested in the 60's for protest marching so that there could be a Venus and Serena Williams as world champions. I was a mere 12 years old when I went to jail (juvenile shelter) so that our people could have the opportunity to achieve success. Does anyone actually believe that I and others placed our lives on the line so that Black folk could have opportunity, then, in turn, give away any resulting opportunities to others, when there are exceptionally competent, talented and professional Black folk available who need a break??? This is a very obvious manifestation of a hidden and deeper self-hatred.

Since Jay Z has been reported to have married a nice lil southern woman (or is Texas considered western, now?), this had me thinking this morning. Hhhmmm. A southern woman--what does that mean nowadays? When I was a kid and would spend my summers in Florida and return to New York state, I could definitely see the differences between southern blacks and northern black people that I encountered.
I see some subtle differences today, but I think mainly due to assimilation, thanks to television, migration, the Internet, and music, etc, we are more alike nowadays. Anyone still see differences in attitudes, customs or culture between northern and southern black women or men? When I go to Florida, it seems as if it's getting harder to hear a genuine Florida southern accent. What about east versus west?
Just a play on Obama's words, and I know providing comments makes for broad generalizations, but do you feel there is a typical black person, if so, what is or would your description be of one?

Young ladies from a Seattle Spring Formal Dance. Simply beautiful and wholesome looking. When was the last time you wore stockings with a dress? While I am on the subject, do people still follow the stockings in church rule?
When I was growing up, you would never come to church without stockings on with a dress. Mini skirts and sleeveless tops were an understood no, no, and this was in the 70's and 80s. I saw a movement from this and changes in the 90s.

Garrard McClendon on Black English
Garrard McClendon's appearance on Chicago Tonight show speaking on his book Ax or Ask, The African American Guide to Better English. Do you switch it up when you need to or do you speak the same way all of the time? Do you have a work -vs- home speech pattern?
