2 toddlers left at home, house catches a fire, aunt worries that food stamp card was inside
This happened in Memphis, TN and Fox News reports the *mother* and aunt went to drop someone off in a car. One of the babies, 3-year old Ladareon Dunn has died, and Fox News reports:
"Two-year old Catareon Dunn remains in extremely critical condition at LeBonheur Children's Hospital. No charges have been filed against the mother and aunt of the children; however, the Memphis Police Department is still investigating the case."
Auntie of the Year is quoted by Fox News:
"The children's aunt, Marilyn Wilson, who left the house with the mother, said she had no regrets about leaving the children home alone, "No, I really don't because if they had been there by themselves, I don't know if the boys set the house on fire or somebody threw something in there to set it on fire. I really need to get in there to see if my purse burned up. I had my Food Stamp Card and everything in there."
Shouldn't all adults involved be charged? Look at the value this woman has placed on Food Stamps. I read this message on another forum earlier and someone made a passing reference to the story and I thought it was a joke. Much too bad it is not.

To paraphrase a quote from the movie Parenthood, "you need a license to buy a dog, or drive a car. You need a license to catch a fish! But they'll let anyone be a parent."
This hurts my heart. Such a shame.
I am a single parent of older children but my heart feels for these children. If I had children this young and I needed to drive someone home i would have either left the aunt to watch them or took them with me, which makes me believe that that was not the purpose of leaving these children home alone and the aunt does not even know how long they were gone. I would have both the aunt and mother charged with neglect and drug tested. The fact that the aunt is smiling, even when the 3 year old has died, and is only worried about her purse with her food stamp card makes me think that Social Services need to be involves in this investigation. This is not a case of running to the corner store and getting cigarettes, which I don't believe should have happened either, you have to be gone a while for a house to catch on fire and the smoke to be so thick that people could not get in to save those kids and my heart is so heavy because of that

This is beyond horrific! I can only imagine what these children have endured all of their lives. Being left in the care of these adults who aren't capable of responsibly caring for them. In my opinion, this supercedes child abuse and neglect. I pray these children survive the trama and never have to witness or experience this kind of occurrence/episode again!
God help us!
It is time to bring back the government orphanages. When stupid people breed the first time, they should have the child taken away at birth and placed in a federal stimulus funded orphanage where they will be taught to call President Obama "da da". They should then be banned from welfare for life. This will keep them from having sex with other gene pool rejects just to get welfare. It is time to stop the freeloaders in this country.
Help me understand. If this had involved an educator, especially a teacher, he or she would have been arrested and automatically found guilty of child abuse. But since it is family, this foolishness is excused. Where are our priorities?
I hope these ignorant people are tossed under the jail...maybe those women should have their tubes tied or sterilized.

What is wrong with people in our society today that we care so little for our children. These women should both be prosecuted for their gross negligence and the ultimate killing of at least one of these babies. Why in heaven's name would you leave children that age alone for any amount of time? These women need some serious intervention and parenting mentoring! Sooo very sad
Ignorance kills both physically and spiritually. Because in this country billions of babies are killed in the womb, a child’s life outside of the womb is considered worthless and endangered at the hands of unfit mothers and relatives that know they are unfit. These ladies had left the toddlers home alone many times before. This time was fatal. Wake up everyone! God assures us that what we sow, we shall emphatically reap. The child that died is in a better place, and Lord protect the child that survives.
I can't believe this! I am a Mental Health Therapist and I look at the Aunt's behavior she is HIGH! They both left to get crack because CRACK HEADS don't trust each other to bring back all of the drugs. So therefore they both forgot all about the children and were very selfish. I can't believe the are still walking around like it was ok. I am not sure about the laws in Memphis however in TEXAS they would have been arrested on the spot. The Aunt was laughing!!!!!!!!
Black Butterfly, you hit the nail on the head! The Aunt has the deamenor of a crackhead and crack comes first. Rehab will not help them...they are far too gone if they can leave 2 and 3 year olds at home alone! You get to the point when you just don't care about anything, but crack...you can tell that when she smiles. Wow! I'm tired of my tax dollars paying for idiots like this anyway, lock both of them up. Something is seriously wrong with our "system". Welfare was designed to help families get on their feet...not to support a crack habit.
