Jennifer Hudson covers Billboard magazine
Jennifer Hudson covers this week’s Billboard magazine and they talk about her being a triple threat and the September 30th release of her self-titled debut album on Arista/RMG. I was wondering how long the record company was going to keep us hanging and I wondered whether or not the record buying public would lose interest in her.
Well, it is nice to know they did not create some formulaic cookie cutter marketing product to force feed to us on all of the Clear Channel stations every hour on the hour. Instead, the record company seems to have given us something unique, Jennifer. Ann Donahue, in the Billboard piece delves into the question of: Can she sell records?
According to senior VP of A&R Larry Jackson, Hudson will serve up everything from R&B and pop, to gospel on this first effort. In other words, there is something for all of her fans and this album should truly reflect her versatility. I don't know about mixing gospel with secular music, but hey...
According to the article, there is a gospel track ”Jesus Promised Me a Home Over There,” “You Pulled Me Through,” a ballad written by Diane Warren, the classic from Dreamgirls, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” and she has collaborations with Rock City, Ludacris, Robin Thicke, and single which is currently No. 14 on Billboard in which she collaborates with Ne-Yo called “Spotlight.” The second single under consideration is collaboration with Ludacris called “Pocketbook.” WATCH SPOTLIGHT VIDEO
I really like this “Spotlight” song. Her voice…well, I don’t need to say. But it reminds me of how music used to be in the 80s. No pop gimmicks. Just a good song with real, pure singing, and I can appreciate that a lot.
Hudson will return to the big screen on October 17th in the film “The Secret Life of Bees.” It stars Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, and Sophie Okenedo and is based on a best selling novel with the story set in North Carolina in the sixties. Jennifer Hudson will play a nanny. Therefore, the Oscar winner goes from an administrative assistant to the role as a nanny. I guess I will have to reserve full judgment until I after I view the film.
Hudson’s view on becoming a triple threat:
“I remember doing ‘Dreamgirls’ and that’s all I had to do, and that was crazy. I would look at Beyonce, because she was doing acting and singing, and I’m like, ‘How the hell can she do that?’ Now I’m looking at it like, ‘Oh, God, all right, if she can do it, if Jamie[Foxx] and Queen[Latifah] can do it, then it means it can be done.’”
