Burgundy haired employee suspended from job

1red.jpgMeyosha Love, a 17 year old Winston-Salem, NC, The Grande movie theatre employee was suspended last week for wearing burgundy hair coloring. Meyosha sports braids with what appears to be burgundy or red hair coloring from the tip up to one third of many of the braids. She has been working for the company for 2 years and received a ten-day suspension.

She is outraged, because she states, “It's not blue. It's not purple. It's not out of the normal…A lot of people get different colored braids…If I was walking normally down the street you wouldn't stop and say 'Wow, she really has crazy hair!'…"I don't think her definition of natural is fair to me for me to have to lost my job.” She says it would take nine hours to get her hair re-done and cost $200, and plans to wear a cap to cover up the color when she returns to work. I wonder if the colored hair creeps from under cap, will that cause another violation which would lead to being fired?

The theatre manager says the hair coloring is a clear violation of company policy, because employees’ hair color, according to WXII TV 12 news must “be a color that naturally occurs in nature on humans." READ MORE & WATCH VIDEO...

I don’t know why this is news, well I guess I know. Companies have this little thingy called “the employee handbook” or “company policy” with all of the little rules we are supposed to follow. We speed read over it or some of us quickly browse through it, but in the end, they can nail us on anything if we violate any policy listed in the company handbook.

Now the question for me would be, did she ever receive a copy of the policy or sign any documents acknowledging receipt of the policy? Did she know about this policy? Well, if she did not know, I guess she knows now. She is right, the hair color isn’t bad. But I would have to side with the company on this one, based only on what I read in the article linked here (IF Meyosha knew the policy existed).

Ten days seems pretty harsh of a sentence.

That's just wrong! A personal attack, if you ask me. Hey, I don't think maroon colored hair looks good either, but it's not like she dyed it bright pink or something. They definitely showed bias here.

According to a recent feature on Channel 12 News (WXII), I was disheartened to learn that The Grand Theater would suspend an employee, Meyosha Love, of two years due to a modest hair style. As a former patron of this theater, I am embarrassed at Ms. Love's treatment by The Grand. I do not intend to patronize this theater any longer, and I am confident that others will heed my example. I believe the decision to suspend her demonstrates a lack of cultural sensitivity and fairness. In no way is Ms. Love's hairstyle offensive or indecent. I would hope that future employees of The Grand would be judged based on their work ethic and the content of their character and not solely on their hair color.

This is a PRIVATE company, not a PUBLIC employer. They have a right to enforce a dtess code as they see fit. When I worked in retail, there was a code of no hair past the collar for men, no earrings for men...it upset a couple of people, but it's NOT THEIR CALL. This is a business decision...you give up your right to self-expression when accepting employment in th private sector, and there is NOTHING wrong with that. I'm overweight, and I wouldn't get hired by a male strip joint, and properly so! My appearance is not what is desired by the owners of the business, and that's up to them, not me.

One more thing...I think her hair looks good, ans I would have NO problem with her working for ME...that would be my call. I don't, however, own the theater! :)
