Is Barack Obama a Natural Born U.S. Citizen?

hawaii.gifOur local Boston Conservative (well he claims to be a Libertarian) talk radio personality has been floating a rumor for about a week pertaining to Obama's place of birth. The rumor claims Obama was not born in the U.S. and therefore is NOT a U.S. citizen. I have only heard Obama was born in Hawaii.

Apparently, the rumor is his birth certificate has been under lock and key (he's supposedly hiding it), and if he is not a U.S. citizen he cannot become President of the United States AND he would have to give up his Senate seat. The radio show personality and his listeners (not me...lol) are praying that rumor it true. Right now, I don't believe it. I could not imagine him pulling a stunt like this. They are working overtime to try to get goods on this guy and he probably anticipated all of these antics. Oh well, that's politics.

Sorry, but Hawaii didn't have a laser printers in 1961. The Obama "certificate of live birth" is a forgery and is not really even a forgery of a birth certificate. Obama was born in Kenya and is not a native US citizen. Where is Hillary?

I don't have too much energy to invest in this one, but my only question would be: If he is not a U.S. citizen, where is the proof and why has this proof not surfaced? I think any person would want to know this. If there are facts to be known, they should be broadcast, but these strategic rumors are getting old and stale.

If he was born in another country wouldn't this be extremely easy to prove? And we still can't get the media to focus mainly on the issues. We go from "baby daddy, baby mama statements, fist pound ballyhoo, to whitey rant rumors."

All of this crap continues to overshadow substantive issues which should be addressed in this campaign. No wonder this country is in so much trouble.

Rory,

Whether or not laser printers existed in 1961 is irrelevant. Nearly any person who orders a birth certificate from the local government in whose jurisdiction they were born will have a new certificate printed from birth records that have been loaded onto databases for some time now. The birth certificate that I have from the City of New York is not the copy issued in the year of my birth, but rather a copy issued about two years ago when I realised that I had lost my previous copy and ordered a new one.

Now that it has been settled that Obama was born in Hawaii, we can be certain from that fact that he is a United States citizen. The 14th Amendment grants citizenship to anyone born in the US whose family does not enjoy diplomatic immunity. Many of Obama's critics have misconstrued a statute that explains the requirements of the time to acquire US citizenship at birth when born outside the US to US citizen parents. The statute's requirements did not apply to Obama's situation and had they purported to deprive those born in the US of citizenship, then the statute would have been unconstitutional.

Now, can we all just accept that both McCain and Obama are natural born citizens and please discuss their policies?

Thank you, Pat and JB.
The level of ignorance and fear-mongering behind such spurious rumors is really both scary and sad.
That a sitting U.S. Senator who has invested all the time and money he has into seeking the highest office in the land would suddenly be found ineligible because of some obscure provision of the law is beyond ludicrous.

As you so rightly point out, all this does is generate unnecessary noise that drowns out the real issues of this election.

If Barack Obama is indeed a US citizen, then there is NO problem, and those who are spreading this rumor should stop, BUT the provision in the law that you speak of is definitely NOT obscure, and NEVER has been, if you are not a US born citizen, then you CAN NEVER be the president of the United States...Arnold Swartzeneger can NEVER be the President, and if Obama is truly a US citizen, then he should show his birth certficate, and prove it , unless he has something to hide...Pat and JB you speak of ignorance...you should know what you are talking about before you call other people ignorant!!!
What you call fear mongering just may be folks trying to stop a deceptive man from leading this country into oblivion...I did not drink the Obama Kool-aid!

2 cents; your ignorance is showing, because this obscure provision in the law that you so ignorantly speak of is not obscure at all; it has always been a law that unless you are a US citizen, then NO Presidente!!! Arnold Swartzenagger can NEVER be the president! Obama does not have anything to worry about if he is indeed a citizen, he needs simply to produce his birth certificate, and NO problem, unless he has something or some things...to hide!!!Yeah...no fear mongering here, just truth seeking.

"I did not drink the Obama Kool-aid!"

Felix, you should not assume I consumed Kool-Aid either. My first choice is out of the presidential race, and JUST because there are two men left standing, don't assume I will vote for either or have tasted any of their Kool-Aid.

I understand your point, but I don't think you understand mine or at least don't want to try and understand my point.

People are just so ignorant and stupid. If you are born in the US, you are a citizen automatically. Period. In the Constitution. If you are born outside the US and one or both of your parents are also US citizens, all you have to do is report the birth to a US consulate in that country, or, if you have gone back to the US, contact the US State Department or go to www.state.gov. They have forms you can fill out. Pretty sweet. Now, do think that even if Obama was born on the moon, he or his parents would have just somehow have forgotten this little step all this time? Highly doubtful. People who spread rumors are ignorant. The unfortunate thing is that most of them like it that way.

The other salient aspect is that Obama already is ineligible with or without the birth certificate. His mother was only 18 at the time. The requirement for native American birth is that the mother must reside in the USA 10 years, 5 of which must be after the age of 16. So 16 + 5 =21. She was 3 years shy of eligibility and Obama is NOT native born in compliance.
I read a few comments on other forums belittling the importance of the birth certificate and Obama’s suspected failure to register for the draft. Here’s the draft registration requirement.
• Selective Service Registration: Defense Authorization Act established Title 5, U.S. Code, Section 3328
The law says that all men living in the United States who are ages 18 through 25 must register, except those who are in valid non-immigrant status (e.g., students, visitors, and people who have been permitted to come to the US for limited periods of time, etc.). The Selective Service interprets this to mean that undocumented men must register. Failing to register is a federal crime, with a penalty of up to five years in prison or a $250,000 fine or both.

Wouldn't it be something IF all this smoke cleared AFTER Obama (assuming he may) is elected president and (could it be) Billy Bob as vice-pres. Obama is impeached and OMG Clinton becomes president. Now that's a scary thought.

All of this commentary only matter if it is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was not born in Hawai'i, or his birth certificate was faked. As I have said before, I am sure this has been looked into long ago. The right wing nut jobs who like to spout rumor, need to come up with proof. Until then, let's just focus on the fact Obama is a typical politician, as exemplified by his flip-flopping recently on every issue he was "liberal" on, now leaning centrist. He can give a great speech, but he is just anotehr politician in the end. Which, in my opinion, is better than being called a lot of things.

okay, none of this would even be an issue if our government would do an extensive search of each presidential candidate... i dont understand why you wouldn't want to find out everything about someone who could very well be our next president. if you don't know who they are, their expectations and reasons, why on earth would you vote for them... if you don't know what they stand for, they could tear our country apart...

Just me said:

It is required to present a birth certificate to get a drivers liscense in this country, perhaps it should be required to present one to run for president.

Mr. Big said:

Since the electronic Hawaiian birth certificate is obvioulsy a forgery, I believe a Senate Hearing is required to investigate the matter in much the same way McCain's natural born citizen status was validated.

Write your Senators.

Rob said:

Once again, it needs to be said that this has all been looked into long ago. He was born in Hawai'i when it was a state, therefore he is a citizen. End of story. McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone, a US territroy at the time, therefore he is a citizen. Myth and rumor do nothing but confuse those that can't think for themselves. People are idiots...
