Hungry Haitians Riot

| | Comments (0)

Angry, hungry poor Haitians stormed the presidential palace yesterday demanding that President Rene Preval resign. UN peacekeepers battled rock throwing rioters, with tear gas and rubber bullets. People have resorted to eating dirt. According to NY Daily news people were shouting, "We are hungry! He must go!" Prices have risen 40% since the middle of last year. I don't understand all of the problems of Haiti, but with all of the resources we have in this world, no one should have to resort to eating mud pies to quell a hunger paining belly.

I wonder how well that sort of activity would go over here in the U.S. with the way gas prices are going, can anyone image a mass of people storming the big house down in Washington, D.C. over gas prices? I mean, what is your limit? People moan over gas prices, but the prices have not reached a critical max that puts people in incontrollable panics. Say if gas prices reached umm...$10/gallon, would that be enough for the masses to want to storm their governor's mansions, or fill up at the gas station and drive off without paying in record numbers? Fuel and food seem to go hand in hand in this country. Because for many of us, if we have not fuel, it's tough for us to have food.
