This is interesting and is an ad (View image)circulating on CraigsList directed at black women. I guess weak black women need not apply. Here is a link to what the actual ad looks like. We have no information on this reality program, and I may just send an email to get more info. If anyone sends and inquiry, let us know more about the show.

Money As Debt

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

Paul Grignon created this fabulous animated film on money---as debt. It is a great educational tool and will help you understand why money is causing some many problems. If you are not familiar with the history of money and the banking system, I encourage you to get the DVD and give it as a gift to family and friends who really need the education. The video is 47 minutes long. If you can't watch it all at once, view it in short sessions. The video is not trying to sell any products. It's only trying to pull the wool particles out of our eyes.

19xx.jpgLately, I have been running across references to the Willie Lynch letter or finding it frequently on blogs. Willie Lynch was supposedly a successful slave owner/trader who went to the West Indies to lecture slave owners on slave sociology and how to owners could keep their slaves in check. After reading some arguments online, I have made my conclusion that documentation of that 'speech' may have been fabricated. I don't want to get into a debate as to whether it is true or not, but what about the content of the letter? Are we living out the lives with the same behavior "Willie Lynch" purported would keep us down and under control. If you have not read it, here is the link. Whether it is authentic or not, read it once. Does it matter whether it is real or fake? Can we learn something from it? The Willie Lynch Letter and The Making of a Slave

I am not a hip hopper, but I love and can appreciate a fun tune to lighten up the day. I ran across this video on brightcove, and I must admit, I admire big girl's confidence. The tune is empty, as it is "hookless," LOL, but I respect the fact that everyone looks like they are having fun, has their clothes on, and the beat is infectious! I don't know how old Vee is, but breasts aren't flying across the set, and no one is in a thong, a$$ isn't jiggling uncontrollably. She gets my vote. I wish you success Heavy Vee. Change that name. You deserve better! "Vee" is fine.

What's going on with our men you ask? Let me explain. More and more they're being raised by women who pass on their material lust to their sons. That's not all women but it's a lot of these young mothers who think they can raise a man on thier own. We now have men who exude feminine traits. They have hair longer than their sister, sport diamonds in both ears bigger than thier mother and love furs more than their grandma. This is what happens when hoochies have kids and raise them on thier own. The girls become video hoes and the boys are just hoes. Let me ask this. How many women on this site acted as if thir son was Samson and refused to cut his hair? Then you ask what happened to the men? "---This response was from a reader over at Media Take Out, who was responding to another reader who had asked what happened to our men.

The leading story was one which was burning up the blogs on black and urban blogs and at the time I created this entry, and had not caught on to mainstream web/blogsites. But an artist whose stagename is Raz B, formerly of a now defunct boy pop-hip-hop quasi R & B group, called B2K, is making molestation charges at their former manager(possibly cousin) named Chris Stokes. You can find the video on the Internet and here are links to the stories on Media Take Out and Sandra Rose. Other names linked to this story on blogs include Marques Houston, Omarion, Ricky Romance. The story is an important one as it draws conclusions: non-believers, believers, and those that don't care. I say, if Stokes is guilty, then he needs to be punished. And the videos out with Raz B exposing these allegations in video taped phone conversations, along with his brother Ricky Romance, appear to be damaging (in a one sided way). So far, on the other side Stokes has reportedly denied these allegations, and most recently Raz B has retracted some parts of his story.

Many components factor into this story, but that one question written above and the response from another MTO reader made me think again, about that question of what is going on with our men?

jstan.jpgWhile in Hartford, Connecticut last month, taking in some R & R, I noticed Pastor J. Stan McCauley was absent from his midday public access channel program he had, and I kept checking the schedule to find out what happened to his program. His program was unique, where he loaded the Word up on the television screen from his laptop/computer, as he sat in a chair in his office and ministered to his audience right there on the screen from his computer. This is what caught my attention 2 years ago, when I first started watching his program, when I would visit in Hartford. This past summer at the West Indian day parade, he walked up to me with a card, and asked for my vote. He was running for mayor on the Republican ticket. J. Stan McCauley was director of Hartford Public Access Television, and reportedly let go after his run for mayor.
casssiusclay.jpgRecently, at about three in the morning, I was listening to an AM radio program called Danny Stiles’ Music Museum and it features Big Band and classic music from the 60s down to about the 1920s, and the dj mentioned and played a song by former heavy weight boxing champion formerly known as Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali). I can’t help it, but sometimes when I listen to some of that music for the 20s & 30s, I think of how good times were for some, and how awful life was for some of us.

Anyway, in 1963, Muhammad Ali, then known as Cassius Clay put out a single record singing “Stand By Me.” The man could have had a career in singing, and I think he sounds good. Take a listen to this You Tube audio. Who knew “The Greatest” champ had pipes for something else besides talking junk…lol. Perhaps a singing career would not have been as lucrative as boxing? Just thinking… Thanks to the You Tuber who posted the audio file. Click here to start the song.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Vacation:

Going on vacation for a couple of weeks...hoping to return on the 1st of the New Year, and this will be the last post for the year. Please feel free to read the older posts, and all comments are welcomed. Negative or positive. Doesn't matter. Just try to keep the language clean and be respectful. I look forward to adding more thought provoking type entries in 2008, with some fun or informative stuff also.

Housecleaning:

I started working on updating the blog software to this site and still have some work to do, such as modifying the design for some pages, and adding back the "recent comments" column. I am not a techie. I repeat: I am not a techie...lol, but I am figuring things out.

I will clean up some of the YouTube videos which may no longer be available. It takes time to go through those posts.

Expired audio links I will only re-upload upon request, as they expire every 60 days if there is no activity, and most audio links were added in many of the earlier posts.

Will add unmoderated comments, once everything else is done first, and a spam filter is installed.

Thanks to those who took the time to respond to the posts on this site. They all get read, but not commented on, especially if they are personal attacks. But it's cool in a non-cool sort of way. Thanks to those who sent video links or article links. As always, your thoughts are appreciated. We are not monolithic.

SIKE!

This ad was found in a New York newspaper and Gawker wrote a post about it publishing the email address. They have most of the money and they need someone or others to chip in so they can stay in their swanky, upscale apartment. Personally, I think they should just have a good old fashioned ghetto rent party. You know, like Florida, James, JJ, Thelma, and Michael used to do. "Good Times. Anytime you need a payment. Good Times. Anytime you need a friend...."

I have red lighted the email address in the article. But this is funny. As the saying goes, "It doesn't hurt to ask." I guess. WIll some good philanthropic samaritan 'rescue them?' Poor babies.

Alvin Ailey Dance

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater performs at City Center in Manhattan until December 31st. They will be performing their routine “The Groove to Nobody’s Business”, which celebrates New York subway riders. While watching them, I am also reminded of the Garth Fagan Dancers. Public schools need to incorporate more arts into the curriculums. Here is a video of Alvin Ailey’s Wade in the Water from "Revelations." It is just mesmerizing and here is a link to an interview with the late Ailey and Judith Jamison. An Evening With Alvin Ailey Interview

vagisil.jpgAn interesting new product has been introduced by the makers of Vagisil which is an over the counter test kit that allows women to check their vaginal pH. The test is an indicator of whether you may have a yeast infection versus some other infection.

The Vagisil Screening Kit comes with two swabs and pH chart. After performing a vaginal swab, the woman then matches the color up with the closest match in color on the pH chart. The results won’t diagnose a infection for you, but with a yeast infection there is a certain pH range, and with other infections there is a likelihood that the pH will be different. If you have never experienced a yeast infection before, it is recommended that you see a doctor. In my opinion, every sexually active woman should have a complete STD screen periodically.

There is a symptoms checklist and video to demonstrate more on the product. Currently, you can find the product in a drugstore or women’s health section in a grocery store, and the price is $15-$20. Vagisil Screening Kit Information

We have all done it. We go into a department store sifting through a pile of neatly stacked shirts, and if you wear a large or like the xxx sizes, you know you need to start at the bottom. You unfold them, checking the tags for sizes, and then you try to fold them back exactly the way you found it. However, you never quite….(having a Cedric the Entertainer moment, with the Luther Vandross curl joke…lol). Some people don't bother to try to re-fold, we just throw the unfolded shirts on top of the pile.

Well, I have never mastered it (dept store way), so for the curious, here is a video link to show you how to fold a shirt, department store style. WATCH VIDEO

Room and board at Harvard University has climbed to $45,620, and rich families who had had to depend on loans, grants, and personal savings will get a break. Harvard will pitch in more towards tuition, room, and board. They can afford to, their endowment fund of almost $35 billion, and this will help families who really need help, but can never quite qualify for this or that type of financial assistance.

It is laughable that the government considers anyone making >$100k upper class or $50k middle class, when they tax that income to death. Therefore, if you or your child thought Harvard was out of reach financially, it is time to reconsider. Parents between $60k and $120k will need to contribute 10 percent of their income. Their web address is www.harvard.edu.

Perhaps other colleges and universities will follow suite, and help some of middle class individuals and families.

The 50th Grammy Awards nominees list is out. No big surprises again. A predictable yawn. Here are some notables…uh, usual suspects, Beyonce, Kanye, some new ones- Amy Winehouse, Rihanna, blah, etc., blah, etc. Should Amy Winehouse be rewarded?

Grammy Nod Count:

8 Nods- Kanye West
6 Nods- Amy Winehouse
5 Nods- Foo Fighters, Jay-Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, T-Pain
4 Nods- Akon, Dierks Bentley, Chris Daughtry, Feist, Tim McGraw, John Newton, Ne-Yo, Rihanna, Bruce Springsteen

I knew a Marley would be in the reggae category, rightfully so, for Stephen's “Mind Control” CD, Bob’s sons are true talents, but it seems as if literally a only a handful of reggae artists can get Grammy nods. There is SO MUCH reggae out here.

Essence magazine interviewed Karith Foster, talk show personality Imus’ co-host and asked about how her parents and friends felt when she landed the job. Foster says her parents weren’t thrilled, friends were “okay", but had a lot of questions. They also asked her about being called a sellout:

Essence.com: Okay, last question. Someone is going to call you a sellout. What do you have to say about that?

K.F.: Absolutely. I weighed that and thought about that. What outweighed that is when I thought about what good I can do. If people would call me a sellout, I’d have to say they don’t know me at all, and I am sorry they feel that way. I would hope and prefer they would see this as an opportunity to have a form of representation where there previously was none.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would not label her a sellout. I agree with her in seizing an opportunity and trying to make a difference. Many people who call her a sellout would probably jump at the opportunity if given the chance, because we all would like to think we can make a difference and have something to offer to change this world.

This is a question which has been asked forever, but someone posted this on Black Movie Reviews under The Great Debaters movie review. Really it is an open ended question rather than a review, and the username was "Don't Understand." I think the answer is the choices selected a money driven, and because those who are responsible for hiring these women hire them, because they can. It's a valid question, and the people who do the hiring should answer it.

Here is the entire question:

"I am a Black women and as you can see in for my alias I do not understand.

4. Hitch - Eva Mendes - I like her and think she has skills but is she the only actress in Hollywood?? just a ?

I had a flashback on a roommate situation I had during my time at community college back in the late 80s. He had no life…well; his life was monitoring my life. However, I will not malign him too much. I was trying to find this list online, which a co-worker at the time gave to me.

My main problems with this roommate had to do with his sloppiness and the fact that he needed to find a life. This list was the source of a few blow-ups, because every time I would post one on the refrigerator, he would yank it down.

My gripes were he would urinate on the toilet seat, not empty the garbage, and leave dirty pots and dishes around. Frequent reminders to correct the behavior were useless. Well, that household union lasted about two months and I was outta there. We had a meeting with the landlord, and subsequently after much begging for mercy and explaining the guy's stalker-like behavior, he let me out of the lease.

I reproduced it as much as I could…here goes, and I have attached a Word document of the list if you need to use it… ;-)

Safe to Eat Tuna!

The American Heart Association recommends eating at least 2 servings of fish per week. Fish contains fatty oil that protects the heart. There have been conflicting reports on whether canned tuna is good, but tuna has many benefits, as it is a low cholesterol, high protein, low calorie food rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which helps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

The FDA defines canned tuna as “Chunk” or “Solid/Fancy,” and “white” tuna can only come from Albacore. Albacore is my favorite, and I love it chopped up in salad, in macaroni salad, or just a plain sandwich with mayo and lettuce. It’s good grilled in a pan with onion, pepper, and hot peppers. A side of rice complements this dish well…Canned tuna is about the only thing I buy/eat from a can.

Solid/Fancy — solid loin portion, packed in a single layer to fit in the can
Chunk — mix of cut pieces of different sizes

Is this our *Pat Tillman* moment, where a famous person dies and attention is called to all the pre-existing issues which existed in a situation (war). In our case, in the black community, crime and the black male. Yes, Pat Tillman died a hero, while serving for our country, but that is not the parallel I am drawing. Sean Taylor was a hero to someone. The point I am touching upon is, will the death of Sean Taylor, help to kick start a movement which attempts to tackle these problems in our (entire black community)?

I was listening to a radio program today on 96.9 WTKK in Boston, where the host Jimmy Myers interviewed Dr. Alvin Poussaint and Congressman Bobby Rush, and they touched on many of these issues. One of them stated 900,000 black males are in U.S. prisons. These are fathers, brothers, and sons. I will add the interview later.

Dear Black Man: I'm Not Angry, I'm Mad As Hell

Both sites are filled with real concerns and advice from real people, not politically correct answers typical of relationship columns in various publications. There is a male companion site www.DearBlackWoman.com.

My preconceived notion was: Oh no....not another black male bashing site. But I found it to be more of a tool for dialogue to some serious concerns black woman have about black men. Visitors can submit open letters for response, hopefully by the opposite sex. There is a message forum also. The men's site appears to be younger and developing.

My biggest questions for both men and women would be 1) Why don't we marry? 2) Why do we have children first, then maybe school, then maybe, maybe marriage? I struggle with answering those questions. I think it is time to stop using slavery as an excuse. Check them out.

I am glad I took the typing class in high school, because if I did not, it would have been a horrendous struggle trying to type assignments for college. I would still be pecking away in frustration or paying people to type my papers. Back then I was never a speed typist. My focus was on accuracy with less emphasis on speed. A 75 wpm typist, I did not aspire to be, so when we had typing tests in the class, I always scored well in the accuracy category. My best effort was about 25-30 wpm error free.

This is one underrated skill, which holds teens and adults back from entry level jobs in customer service call centers, clerical, other positions, and growing a business. It is a skill I would put in the must have category for job preparedness. Take this typing test to see if you have improved since that high school course or have regressed. Typing should be a requirement for high school graduates. Correction, typing can start in kindergarten.
