What happened to power 104.1 Hartford CT radio station?

| | Comments (23)

I was driving to Hartford, Connecticut last week and noticed the major R&B and hip hop station changed its format to rock with no warning to the listening audience...what a nice farewell, thank you. At first, I thought it was a mistake, as I kept flipping the channels back and forth I eventually realized it was not a mistake. I was trying to find the Steve Harvey Morning Show.

The same thing happened last year here in the Boston area when 97.7 was switched to rock without warning or notice. The loyal radio audience is the last to know, the jocks and staff probably only know within only a 24 hours notice. It's just cold, callous, and inconsiderate. There's no better way to say screw you to the listening audience.

In a BayState Banner article:
"“They sold us out,” echoed Karen Seymore, a community activist. “All for the sake of a dollar. I’m just angry and upset that they could disregard our community.”

The “they” in this case are the owners of Radio One, Inc. — Cathy Hughes and her son Alfred Liggins. Started 25 years ago, the company owns and operates 69 radio stations in 22 American cities, and programs a channel on XM Satellite Radio. The publicly traded company also owns a 40 percent stake in TV One, a cable and television network started in 2004." READ MORE...

12-4-7 Update: For those interested, here is a petition site link, although I don't think it will help, as it is a done business deal. You are probably better off by writing a letter to the folks who sold it, letting them know how you feel, then move on. The Petition to bring back Power 104.1

An article by Courant.com states:

"The change happened with little fanfare last Thursday after comedian Steve Harvey's nationally syndicated show wrapped for the morning. The station went to a commercial break, returning with the song that would trumpet its new direction: The Clash's "This Is Radio Clash."

The format has less to do with the popularity of hip-hop and more to do with a void in alternative rock on Hartford-area radio dials, said Todd Thomas, local operation manager for Clear Channel Communications Inc., which owns the newly christened 104One. Hartford has long been well served with Top 40 and adult-contemporary stations but hasn't had an alternative-rock option since 104.1 fled for hip-hop in late 2003.

Power 104's syndicated shows Harvey's and Wendy Williams' afternoon gossip and music gabfest were both popular draws, Thomas said. And the station has been flooded with e-mails asking for them back.

"But those shows can be heard online. We're trying to offer something unique to the marketplace," he said. "And what we've been hearing since the [modern rock] format left the city, is ... that women and men between the ages of 25 and 34 in the Hartford area really don't have a radio station to listen to." READ MORE...

The article goes on to discuss how the station's new format will bring more modern rock concerts to the area, but it makes on mention or no attempt to explain the abrupt removal of the of the hip hop R&B format with total disregard for the listening audience's feelings or concerns. What's interesting is the reporter delivers another light blow, and goes on to quote DJ Buck (104's former competition, who obviously STILL has his day job), station 93.7's morning show host and program director.

Thank GOD they did. We had more than enough hip hop / r&B / rap stations in CT. And not enough stations playing music throughout the day.

Perhaps you forgot what happened about 4 years ago when the station randomly changed from modern / alternative rock to rap/hip hop? I was upset then, because there was NO station I could listen to, you guys had about 4 at the same time. Now you lose one and still have 3, I gain one and can start listening to the radio again finally.

Thanks for bringing back the REAL Radio 104.1.

My co-worker and I were just talking about what happened to the Steve Harvey and the Morning Show? What the hell happened. I loved listening to Steve and his wisdom every morning. He has advice for everything and alot of times it reflects a certain aspect of current life for everyone. I totally hate rock! Steve Harvey had a loyal audience abroad. Bring him back!

Oh &*&% you.....it was very rude to totally just get rid of the radio station like they did. They could have notified the listeners of the sudden changed. Overall, it was &%&%&% up....So &%*% them! Listen to KC 101 and 95.7, for your pop and rock music.

I am SOOO happy with the change. We only had WPLR( and they have a VERY SMALL selection of stuff they can play) and New Yorks 103.9 which isn't bad - unless the weather is bad....

Come on... Can't we share??

XO
Bless You

Thank God is right!!! I was happy to hear that the real radio 104 was back. I couldn't stand hearing Steve Harvey or Wendy Williams while flipping through the stations. We finally have a radio station that plays bands like Sublime, Incubus, & 311. All you Power 104 have other stations like 93.7 (which was also originally rock. BRING BACK THE ZEP SET!!!) and 94.3, so learn how to share!

Dear Steve Harvey Morning Show:
I was truly disappointed to wake up and find that I was unable to locate the Steve Harvey Morning Show any longer. I am very disappointed at the fact that 1)The show was taking off the air in certain or all parts of connecticut were you are so loved. 2)with-out warning to your many listener's. 3) That I can no longer wake up every morning and listen to the first 12 minutes of God using Steve Harvey to encourage millions of people in not excepting negative circumstances in their live's because God loves them and that all thing's are possible with God . And last but not least th way that one is able to start their day with so much laughter listening to Steve and the crew. Steve , Carla, Tommy and the rest of the crew you are so truly missed and I'll be praying that God's bring's you back to the million's of fans who love's you.

Bring the Steve Harvey Morning Show Back, Please Bring them BACK Yours Truly,

Radio 104.1 was Rock Back in its haydays of the late 90's early 2000's (who can forget 104 fest). I am happy that its back. I am black and i am ashame of the crap that hip-hop station are playing, and marketing towards Blacks. Time for a change, change is good.

Thank god they brought back this station to what it once was. It was like getting an early Christmas present! I am so in the Holiday spirit now. This station rocks again!

I liked 104.1 when it was the alternative station, the format that replaced it sucked-do we really need another hip hop/top forty station, the newest format is great no BS radio, Bob Marley to new alternative I've so sold on this format, they actually play cool music, while I've listened to WPLR for years, Zep, Stones, pink floyd is cool but they play the same songs every week. A huge thumbs up for the new format.

I think that its great that they changed. There were literally no rock/alternative stations in ct. Someone mentioned kc101 but now they only play rap and pop. There are so many stations that play rap/ hip hop but there werent any alternative stations, so please stop complaining and just go listen to 93.7

Greetings,

The new format at 1041 (WURH-FM) is practically ideal, IMO. Reminds me quite a bit of the (somewhat) recently defunct TubeTV which we used to be able to watch on Comcast cable channel 261 (may it rest in peace).

Like TubeTV, the focus at 1041 is the MUSIC -- really, just the music -- no DJs (for now anyway - generally, no loss there!) and respectfully low-key commercials that are as brief as you are ever likely to find on an ad-supported radio station. The website even gives a chronological playlist for the whole day -- now that rocks!

http://1041music.com/pages/whatsong.html

Go ahead --- take a look --- definitely rock, but they aren't afraid to sneak in a little Marley here and there, then maybe some Bosstones, Clash, Linkin Park, Weezer, STPs and on & on....very nice mix.

Sure hope this current format can last; they will be hard pressed not to suffer a decline in quality because it's truly peak right now.

Im pretty sure they changed the original 104.1 to rap crap with no warning. thank god it came back. i would personally rather listen to music i can understand than listen to music about guns and drugs and going clubbing or some other bull

Power 104.1 did bad in the ratings and is now gone because it..... SUCKED! I like Radio 104.1, as a fan of both rock and rap, we already had enough Hip Hop stations (93.7) and Hip Hop leaning stations (95.7, 101.3) and not enough alternative stations. I never thought that clear channel, the biggest radio company in the U.S. would bring back a station from the past, but I am glad they did. It comnes as no suprise that the format changed withoput notice, becuase look who owns them!!!!!
