Is HIP HOP whitening up the NFL?
Doug Robinson for the Deseret Morning news wrote an article on the racial makeup of two football teams (Colts & Patriots) who have an upcoming match up. The article explores the fact that hip hop culture may be ruining the chances for promising, hopeful black sports professionals.
He makes references to claims by Jason Whitlock (who is black), that the NFL is quietly whitening up it's teams, because it does not want to risk harboring a negative corporate image, brought on by hip-hop or employees who embrace hip-hop, to a point where it affects their image on the job.
One could also question: Are black players becoming increasingly ineligble for hire? Are more white players becoming better candidates for hire (more talented physically & better academically)? Employers are practicing more affirmative action? I am not sure about the answer...
Robinson writes:
And one other thing: It will match two of the whitest teams in the NFL.
Both the Colts and Patriots have 30 black players and 23 whites or non-blacks, which means about 57 percent of the teams' 53-man rosters are black.
The league average is about 70 percent and has been for years.
This fact has gone largely unnoticed (or ignored) by the same media that made such a fuss about the declining numbers of black players in Major League Baseball. The only one who noted it is Jason Whitlock, a columnist for the Kansas City Star.
Whitlock brings all this up only because he believes it is "socially significant" and that this "whitening" of the Colts and Patriots is no accident; it is the result of the idiotic behavior of the "hip-hop generation" and perhaps the start of a trend that eventually will reduce the number of black players leaguewide.
"African-American football players caught up in the rebellion and buffoonery of hip-hop culture have given NFL owners and coaches a reason to whiten their rosters," he wrote. "... Sensible people have grown tired of it. Football people are recognizing it doesn't contribute to a winning environment." READ MORE...
