joshua Packwood.jpg Joshua Packwood graduated at the top of his class with a 4.0 grade point average. He will make history at the historically black college as the first white valedictorian in the school's 141 year history. Packwood could have gone to any Ivy League school of choice, but he chose Morehouse in Atlanta, Georgia. “I’ve been forced to see the world in a different perspective, that I don’t think I could’ve gotten anywhere else," Joshua states. All I can say is "wow!" Another child genius, Moshe Kai Cavalin, 10, has an A- average at the East Los Angeles College in California. He is taking courses in advanced mathematics, foreign languages and music. I wonder outside of studying and school if he acts like and plays like a 'typical' 10 year old. These stories always amaze me. Was he speaking, read, and peforming mathematical calculations at 12 months of age? READ MORE...

assassinusher.jpgJamaican dancehall artist Assassin is doing a collabo with R&B superstar Usher, for a remix of Love In This Club. How many times are they going to re-fix this song? usherassissin.jpgI flat out don't like this song.

I don't hate it, but it's just an average sounding song (to me, and it does not match the same level as his previous work), so hopefully, Assassin can add so island fire to it and change my mind.

His videos are always cool. Love dancehall. READ MORE... WATCH Love in this Club Video

1cigarettes.jpg Below is an opinion piece from the LA Times. The government wants to ban flavored cigarettes, but not menthol flavored cigarettes. Seventy-five percent of black smokers buy menthol cigarettes, so the message is: Blacks can have their menthol cigarettes along with the cancer, heart, chronic and terminal respiratory disease and ailments, cigarette smoking causes? They want to protect non-menthol flavored smokers, but not menthol flavored smokers? I agree people shouldn't take the first puff which may be the beginning of a lifelong habit, but that is not the subject at hand. Great article. _________________________________________________________________________________

Why not ban menthol?

A new bill stops short of banning the cigarette flavoring with the most market appeal, and the most African American buyers.
May 14, 2008

Legislation that would give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration power to regulate tobacco products includes the ability to ban flavored cigarettes, such as those infused with strawberry, cloves or cinnamon. But it stops short of listing the flavoring that actually entices the most smokers: menthol. Mentholated brands, it seems, are simply too important to the industry's bottom line. But let's be clear: It's not the brands that are important, it's the buyers -- African Americans.

Almost 75% of African American smokers use menthol brands, compared with one-quarter of white smokers, and removing menthol might lead to a significant drop in smoking. That could lead to a big drop in profits, as menthol cigarette sales account for more than a quarter of the $70-billion U.S. market.

I know school is coming to a close for many, but this is an interesting story about Laurence Thomas, a black Syracuse University philosophy professor, who recently caused a campus wide debate on text messaging in class. Some students were texting in class and he walked out. Students and family members were angered, saying they pay $30,000 for tuition and he should not have walked out. I took a course where the professor had a rule: If your cell phone goes off in class, you are dismissed for that day. I never heard one ringtone in that class.

Here are excerpts from Higher Ed:

"Thomas followed through on his threat (as he had done just a few days earlier). And he then sent the university’s chancellor, his dean, and all of the students an e-mail message explaining his actions and his frustration at the “brazen” disrespect he had received in class. In the e-mail, he noted that the student who sent the text message is Cuban, and that last year, two Latino students had started to play tic-tac-toe during his class.

While Thomas noted that white students are also rude, he expressed frustration that — especially as a minority scholar himself — he would be treated in this way. “One might have thought that for all the talk about racism and the good of social equality, non-white students would be particularly committed to respecting a black professor,” Thomas wrote.
